Will AI Recommend Your Business? How to Get Found in ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity

Half of consumers now use AI search for buying decisions. Most small businesses are invisible to AI. A practical guide to getting found in ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity.
I ran a visibility comparison for a client last month. Not the traditional kind. I typed twenty questions that her customers might ask into ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity. Things like “best bookkeeping service for restaurants in [her city]” and “recommend a fractional CFO for small businesses.” Real questions, the kind her ideal clients would type at 10 p.m. when they’re tired of doing their own books.
She appeared in zero of the sixty responses. Two of her competitors showed up on all three platforms.
That was the entire conversation. Not pricing, not positioning, not brand colors. We spent the rest of the session figuring out why AI couldn’t find her.

Your Customers Are Already Asking AI
This isn’t a prediction. McKinsey’s AI Discovery Survey covered nearly 2,000 U.S. consumers toward the end of last year and found that half are now intentionally using AI-powered search to make purchasing decisions. Not casually. Intentionally. They’re asking ChatGPT for restaurant recommendations, telling Perplexity to compare service providers, and running Google AI Mode queries that sound more like conversations than keywords.
That number surprised me less than what came next. Forty-four percent of those users now call AI search their primary source for buying decisions. Traditional search sits at 31%. I’ve been in business technology long enough to recognize what it looks like when a dominant channel starts losing ground. This is that moment.
For a small business owner, the practical question isn’t whether AI search matters. It’s whether AI has enough evidence about your business to recommend you when someone asks.
The Five-Minute AI Visibility Test
Before you hire anyone or change anything on your website, run this test yourself. It takes five minutes and will tell you more than most agency proposals.
Write down ten questions your ideal customers would ask an AI system. Be specific. Not “best plumber” but “who’s the best plumber for old houses in [your town].” Not “recommend an accountant” but “recommend a CPA who works with contractors.”
Run each question through ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity. For each response, record three things: whether your business appears, which competitors show up, and what sources the AI cites in its answer.
